Staff of Diamond Bank Protest Against Unfair Treatment

Some Diamond Bank Plc staff on Wednesday took to the streets of Lagos to protest against an alleged unfair treatment meted out to them by their employer.
The workers, who came out in their droves at the Victoria Island branch of the bank, were said to have carried placards with such words- "No More Delay of Our Entitlements," and "Diamond Bank Release us from Slavery" among others. Read more....

Backed by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), the aggrieved workers called on the bank's authorities to account for the discrepancies and unfair deductions from their salaries.
In their allegations, the workers claimed that despite the fact that taxes were constantly deducted from their salaries, there were no hard facts to back up the remittance to government.

The bank's Vice-Chairman of NUBIFE, Eniola Ilesanmi, said their grouse had lingered for years and culminated in the protest after their numerous agitations were ignored.
He said: "For several years we have been agitating because our taxes are deducted before our salaries are paid but we don't get tax clearance certificate and this is my ninth year as a staff of the bank.
"Also, my national housing fund is constantly deducted but my national housing fund account is nil and again, my trust funds account is irregularly remitted."
He added: "We don't have workers manual as well as conditions of service and these are some of the issues we were agitating for but the management turned deaf ears to us.
"On several occasions, we had written letters to our management on the issue and we had also written to NUBIFE and the Nigerian Labour Congress but they refused to listen to us until we decided to protest."
Also, National President, NUBIFE, Danjuma Musa, urged the bank to step up and address the issues of its members of staff or face being picketed by the union.
