The Federal Government has approved the sum of $3.7 billion for the power sector to improve its transmission lines, so as to be able to wheel 20,000 megawatts of electricity.
Vice President Namadi Sambo, who disclosed this at a meeting with Nigeria-Canadian Association of Greater Toronto area, in Canada at the weekend, said the money was approved last week.
Speaking at an interactive session, he explained ongoing efforts at improving infrastructure in the country, noting that “President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration is committed to ensuring adequate power supply, improvement in transportation, aviation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) , agriculture, health care services, education and good governance.”
While pointing out the contributions of Nigerians in diaspora to national development, Sambo implored them to return home and be part of the effort at transforming the country.
He noted that it was in recognition of their contributions that a diaspora bond of N1 billion was set up.
Earlier, the president of the Nigeria-Canadian Association, Fabian Nwoha, had expressed the desire of the association to contribute positively to the development of the nation, noting that they had been discouraged by negative stories emanating from Nigeria.
However, he observed that with the new developments being witnessed in the country, they were confident in the ability of the government to deliver on promises.
Nwoha reminded government of its promise to provide a Consular office in Toronto, so as to help ease emerging diplomatic issues.
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada, Dr Ojo Maduekwe, commended the association.
